Big Brother Faces Criticism Over Housemate's Behavior
Women's Aid charity and viewers express concern over 'coercive and controlling' conduct shown on reality television.
The television show Big Brother is facing criticism from the charity Women's Aid and viewers who are calling for housemate Omar to be removed from the program. The concerns stem from scenes aired Monday that depicted a "scary" row between Omar and his girlfriend Rhianna, during which she ended their relationship.
Rhianna stated she did not like the way Omar spoke to her, leading to tension when he warned her to "stop talking about him" to other housemates. The confrontation escalated in a storeroom, prompting intervention from Big Brother, who called a tearful Rhianna to the Diary Room. Several other housemates also commented that their relationship appeared "unhealthy."
Despite Omar and Rhianna seemingly reconciling later that night, viewers took to social media platform X to express their dissatisfaction and demand Omar's removal from the show.
Women's Aid released a statement condemning Omar's behavior, noting they had been contacted by concerned viewers. Veronica Oakeshott, Head of External Affairs at Women's Aid, stated that "coercive control creates invisible chains and a sense of fear that impacts every element of a survivor's life." She added, "It's worrying to see behaviours like this being given a platform in popular media like Big Brother." The charity highlighted the risk of minimizing survivors' experiences and presenting abuse as entertainment, urging television companies to engage with experts to better protect contestants.
Viewers have observed the unfolding dynamics of Rhianna and Omar's relationship throughout the series. Rhianna confided in another housemate, Yasmin, expressing confusion and distress over Omar's treatment, stating it made her "feel like I've constantly been doing something wrong" and "feel like I'm going crazy."
Omar's interactions, including a whispered demand to Rhianna not to discuss him, were cited by viewers as examples of abusive behavior. One viewer on X wrote, "That specific behaviour is very common among abusers if he's not careful." Another commented, "Omar needs a warning for his emotionally abusive behaviour. That is NOT okay."
Social media commentary also included concerns about younger viewers potentially normalizing such behavior. Influencer Dean McCullough described the scenes as "completely unacceptable" and Omar's treatment of Rhianna as "abusive and toxic."
