Big Brother contestant sparks outrage with 'fear of people with no limbs' comment

A contestant on the reality show Big Brother has ignited controversy after admitting to a fear of people without limbs, a statement made to a housemate who is a quadruple amputee. Rochelle Rackham, 57, confessed to Charlotte Notts, 18, that she felt ashamed of her fear, stating, "Just like, no arm. When I saw you, I was like, 'Oh my god,' and I feel so ashamed because now I don’t even look at it."

Notts, who lost her limbs at age three after contracting meningitis, shared the exchange with fellow housemate Lynx Noumey, 24. Viewers took to social media platform X, formerly Twitter, to express their anger, with many labeling Rackham's comments as "disgusting and outrageous." One user wrote, "That was disgusting what Rochelle said about Charlotte, just because she has a disability doesn’t mean she is different from anyone else!! She is really mean."

Another commenter echoed similar sentiments, stating, "Exactly it just shows some people still don't know about disabilities and when they need to keep quiet or ask in a respectful way... She did the same when they were discussing mental health..."

Rackham's remarks have been described as insensitive by some viewers, particularly given Notts's personal experience.

Following the confession, Notts relayed the conversation to other housemates, recounting Rackham's statement about her fear. Noumey responded with disbelief, asking, "What the fk is that?" Another housemate, Chelsey, suggested Rackham "needs to learn to shut her mouth, a bit."

Fellow housemate Rhianna attempted to mediate the situation, expressing that the comments were "a bit much" and that she would address it.

However, some viewers defended Rackham, arguing her comments were poorly worded but stemmed from shame rather than malice. One defense read, "I don’t think Rochelle is a villain for this. It was clumsily worded and tbh it didn’t need to be said but I think in her own way, she was trying to explain that she was ashamed... She’d had that fear and meeting Charlotte has been good as she just sees her like everyone else now... I don’t think Rochelle meant she’s actually scared of ppl with no limbs, I think she just worded it wrong."

Content creator Scott Mousley shared a video on social media discussing the exchange, calling the comments "outrageous" and expressing sadness for Charlotte's experience. His followers reportedly shared similar sentiments, with one noting, "This is actually so upsetting and it makes me really sad that people are frothing with excitement because it’s ‘drama’. That is a human being that just had to absorb those comments..."
