Jackie, a bald eagle from Big Bear whose nest gained widespread online attention, died early Monday morning after a prolonged fight with anemia. She was 3 weeks old.
She had been receiving intensive treatment at the Ojai Raptor Center after being found in a critical state in the wilderness. The veterinary team provided her with oxygen, supportive care, and continuous monitoring in the intensive care unit. Specialists were consulted as her condition worsened over several days despite the efforts.
The Ojai Raptor Center stated on Instagram that "every decision was guided by the available medical evidence, her welfare, and our responsibility to do what was in her best interest." It remains unclear if she was ill before an incident captured by a wildlife observer, which showed her being attacked by two juvenile eagles shortly before her hospitalization.
Jackie was known for her partnership with another bald eagle, Shadow, and their nest in Big Bear became a focal point for millions of online viewers.
