Big 12 Dominates Top 10 as Miami Reclaims No. 1 Ranking
An unprecedented weekend of upsets reshuffled college football's AP Top 25, elevating the Big 12 and placing Miami at the top.
The landscape of college football has been dramatically altered following a weekend of significant upsets, propelling three Big 12 teams into the top 10 of The Associated Press Top 25 poll and placing Miami at No. 1. This shift comes after five of the top seven teams lost on Saturday, marking the most losses on a single regular-season day in the 90-year history of the AP rankings.
No. 2 BYU, No. 8 Texas Tech, and No. 10 Utah now find themselves among the nation's elite. Their ascent is largely attributed to their undefeated status over the weekend, while major programs in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) experienced unexpected defeats. Georgia, Alabama, and Texas all suffered losses, creating openings in the upper echelon of the rankings.
This marks a notable achievement for the Big 12, which last had three teams in the top 10 following the conclusion of the 2021 season with Baylor, Oklahoma State, and Oklahoma. Miami, representing the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), surged to the No. 1 spot after a double-overtime victory against rival Florida State. This is the first time in nearly six full seasons that a team from outside the SEC or Big Ten has held the top ranking. Miami's return to No. 1 ends a 24-year drought, adding to its program's eighth-most all-time appearances at the top.
BYU made a significant statement with its 24-20 upset victory over then-No. 2 Notre Dame. The Cougars, ranked as a 10.5-point underdog, achieved their highest-ranked win since defeating No. 1 Miami in 1990. This win could be crucial for their College Football Playoff aspirations. BYU, now 6-0 for the third consecutive year, has seen quarterback Bear Bachmeier step up in the absence of star running back LJ Martin. The team also boasts a defense ranked in the top 15 nationally. Their next major challenge will be an away game against rival Utah on November 7.
Texas Tech, coming off an open date, delivered a commanding performance against Arizona State, securing a 53-25 rout. The Red Raiders amassed 404 yards in the first half alone, building a 43-10 lead and finishing with 502 total yards. This marked their highest first-half point total in a conference game in 25 years. Coach Joey McGuire noted a sense of urgency and anger within the team, stating, "There's a lot of different people saying, 'Hey, this doesn't look like last year's team.' Well, it's not last year's team. But this team is still 6-0 and finding ways to win."
Utah secured its spot in the top 10 for the first time in two years, extending the nation's longest winning streak to 12 games with a 27-24 victory over Colorado. The Utes trailed for the first time in four games but rallied with two scoring drives led by Devon Dampier, one of which was set up by an interception return. Coach Morgan Scalley emphasized the difficulty of winning in college football each week.
The parity in the SEC is evident, with five two-loss teams appearing in the Top 25: No. 13 Alabama, No. 18 LSU, No. 19 Texas, No. 20 Florida, and No. 22 Missouri. This number of ranked two-loss teams matches the Week 8 poll of 2022 and reflects the competitive nature of the conference.
Elsewhere, No. 12 Kentucky continues its impressive five-game winning streak, including victories over two top-10 opponents. Their 21-13 win at Oklahoma was their third road victory in the streak, placing them at their highest ranking since late September 2022. Wake Forest's 41-7 victory at California moved them up four spots to No. 17, their best ranking since October 2022. Meanwhile, Texas became the first team in 35 years to lose two consecutive regular-season games after holding the No. 1 ranking, a fate previously met by Florida State in 1991.
