Bieniemy Compares Current Raiders to 'Oakland Raiders' Era

Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy stated that the current Las Vegas Raiders team reminds him of the "Oakland Raiders" from past eras, suggesting a significant resurgence for the franchise.

Bieniemy shared an anecdote about receiving a text message from a former associate, who referred to the upcoming matchup not as "Las Vegas Raiders week" but as "Oakland Raiders week." Bieniemy agreed with the sentiment, acknowledging the historical weight and competitive spirit associated with the Raiders' name.

"I received a text from an old buddy of mine," Bieniemy said. "…He didn’t say Las Vegas Raiders. He said, ‘It’s Oakland Raiders week,’ and he said, ‘enough said.’”

For much of Bieniemy's tenure with the Chiefs, the rivalry with the Raiders has been dominated by Kansas City. The Chiefs held a 17-3 record against the Raiders during Bieniemy's time as running backs coach and offensive coordinator from 2013 to 2022. However, he recognizes that the Raiders were once a feared and storied franchise in the NFL, a standard they have struggled to meet since losing Super Bowl XXXVII.

The Raiders have experienced a period of instability, marked by frequent changes in head coaching and quarterback positions. Since 2004, the team has seen 13 different head coaches and utilized 22 different starting quarterbacks. This lack of continuity has contributed to their struggles on the field.

Under new head coach Klint Kubiak, the Raiders have shown signs of renewed stability and success, starting the season with a 3-0 record for the first time since 2021. Kubiak's offensive scheme has reportedly led to an average of 29.3 points per game, placing them on par with the Chiefs and Dallas Cowboys in scoring.

Veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins has demonstrated strong performance, achieving a 67.8% completion percentage with 661 yards, 9 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions through the first three games. The defense has also seen improvement, reducing their points allowed per game from an average of 25.4 last year to 18 this season.

Free agent acquisition Nakobe Dean has been a standout performer on defense, leading the team with 27 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and 3 forced fumbles. The significant turnaround has elevated the Week 3 matchup between the Raiders and the Chiefs from an anticipated game to a highly notable contest, offering Las Vegas an opportunity to validate its early-season success.
