Bicyclist Fatally Struck by FDNY Ambulance in Staten Island

A bicyclist was fatally struck by an FDNY ambulance in Staten Island earlier this week, according to police.

The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Monday on Richmond Avenue in Graniteville. The unidentified man, believed to be in his 40s, was riding his bicycle southbound in the northbound lane when he was hit by the ambulance. The impact knocked him from his bicycle.

The ambulance driver, a 58-year-old man, was traveling southbound on Richmond Avenue and was in the process of turning left onto Christopher Street when the collision happened. The Fire Department stated that the ambulance was not responding to an emergency at the time, and its lights and sirens were not active.

The cyclist, riding a non-motorized bicycle, sustained severe head and body trauma. He was transported by first responders to Richmond University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The crash occurred near FDNY’s Engine Company 166 and Ladder Company 86. The NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad is investigating the incident. As of Wednesday, police indicated that no criminality was suspected.

The ambulance driver was not heading to an emergency when he hit the biker, who suffered severe head and body trauma. A damaged bicycle lies on the street next to a curb at night, illuminated by emergency vehicle lights.
