Beyond Fall Festivities, 'Locktober' Emerges as a Growing Kink Challenge
An annual month-long chastity practice sees participation from both the gay and straight communities, with some describing it as a way to intensify sexuality and enhance partner pleasure.
For many, October is synonymous with autumn colors, apple cider, and Halloween. However, a segment of the gay community and an increasing number of heterosexual individuals observe the month as 'Locktober,' a period dedicated to chastity and control within kink practices.
Locktober is an annual, month-long challenge centered on chastity, popular within the BDSM and kink communities. Participants wear a chastity cage, which prohibits sexual activity, often under the supervision of a dominant partner who controls the key. According to Clips4Sale, a platform for adult content, chastity has become one of the fastest-growing fetishes, with sales of chastity-related content increasing by 71%. Clips4Sale named it its 2025 Fetish of the Year.
Dan Berman, founder and CEO of KINK3D, a company that manufactures chastity cages, suggests that the practice is not about repression but rather about intensifying sexuality. "For people who are in the world of BDSM (bondage and discipline) or kink, chastity actually has the opposite effect," Berman explained. "It really ramps up and intensifies sexuality."
The practice involves securing the penis in a cage, with a design that allows for urination but restricts full erections. "You get, what I would say is, a partial erection," Berman said. "It will redirect it downward; it will restrict how hard you can get. You will still get aroused, but there is definitely a feeling of compression and not being able to get a full erection."
While the name suggests the entire month is observed, practices vary. Berman advises caution for newcomers, recommending breaks for hygiene and suggesting that the cages can be challenging, particularly at night due to involuntary erections. He compares the use of chastity cages to contact lenses or glasses, meant to be removed before sleep and put back on upon waking.
Berman estimates that his customer base is evenly split between gay and straight individuals. He notes that the cages can also serve as fashion accessories at parties and clubs. In some circles within the gay community, wearing a cage can be a way for individuals to emphasize their role as a 'bottom' partner, symbolically and practically removing their penis from immediate sexual consideration.
Among heterosexual couples, the practice is often employed to enhance their sex lives. "It inverts the discourse over what is typically masculine," Berman stated. "It lets couples do that in a way that is playful and fun and a little bit kinky." He added that it can shift focus to a woman's pleasure and orgasm, sometimes reinvigorating a relationship's spark by making the woman the center of attention.
Tom, a participant who has been in a relationship for two years, agrees that the practice has boosted his girlfriend's confidence and made her feel stronger. He also confirmed that his girlfriend has experienced more orgasms during Locktober, noting that it changes his focus during sexual activity to her pleasure. Tom described the experience as heightened when the cage is removed, and he finds the sustained arousal without orgasm to be a form of extended foreplay.
Sebastian, a gay man who has participated in Locktober for six years, views the experience as more of a spiritual test of willpower than a sexual one. "It’s more of a challenge, a test of willpower, learning to deny what would be a base urge," he told The Post. "The first couple of days are very hard, but by the end you have an achievement."
Sebastian acknowledges that sexual encounters can still occur during Locktober, but he is transparent about wearing the cage. He noted that it adds a different dynamic and that there are ways to navigate intimacy with the cage. For him, Locktober also functions as a form of self-assessment, influencing decisions about social activities and sleep schedules. He concluded that each individual has a unique experience and reason for participating, and that the practice has evolved beyond mere curiosity in both communities.
