Beverley Callard, 69, has provided a candid update on her health following the completion of her radiotherapy treatment for breast cancer. The Coronation Street actress, who was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year, admitted she has been feeling "dreadful" after finishing her final session last Thursday.
Callard shared her experience on Instagram, explaining that while most of her 10 radiotherapy sessions went relatively well, the aftermath has been challenging. "This weekend, oh my god, I've felt dreadful. My skin on my chest and everywhere is now so sore," she said, detailing the application of various lotions and potions. She also reported experiencing nausea, dizziness, and exhaustion, describing it as feeling "worn out" and "in shock."
A nurse had previously cautioned Callard that "it's not actually over" when treatment concludes, and that "it's the beginning when you sort of finish your treatment." Another individual described her as still "cooking," a sentiment Callard now understands, noting her skin feels hot, both externally and internally.
Despite the discomfort, Callard is focused on recovery, emphasizing the need for rest and planning to research vitamins and health foods. While she is eating healthily, her appetite has diminished. She advised others undergoing similar treatment, "don't expect too much of yourself."
Last week, Callard had announced the completion of her 10 radiotherapy sessions, expressing relief and hope that further treatment might not be necessary. She mentioned a follow-up appointment with her professor in two months, after which she will have a clearer understanding of her prognosis through mammograms and consultations with oncologists.
Previously, Callard had outlined her treatment plan, which involved "10 days of radiotherapy, five consecutive days, then a weekend off, then five more days." She had confirmed she could still work while awaiting the start of her treatment. Medics had reportedly expressed concern that she should have begun radiotherapy earlier following her diagnosis, a point Callard found difficult to hear.
Callard, who recently moved to Ireland, faced delays in transferring her medical records between countries. She had also returned to work on the Irish soap opera Fair City in February, a role she began earlier that month. Shortly before resuming filming, she received her breast cancer diagnosis and returned to the UK for surgery and treatment. Upon her return to work after surgery, she described feeling "nervous and on edge," likening it to the first day of school. However, after her first day of filming, she reported a positive experience, feeling re-integrated with the cast and crew.
