The game features the Guardians and the Tigers, both within striking distance of the AL Central division lead, despite holding sub-.500 records in mid-August. The Guardians have faced challenges since the All-Star break, losing their share of the division lead on July 21 and subsequently falling to fourth place. The Tigers, conversely, have shown improvement, holding the third-best record in the American League over the past month and ranking among the top five in runs scored during that period.
