Best Month to Apply for a Job Revealed by New Study
January and February see fierce competition and sluggish hiring, while June offers a sweet spot for job seekers, according to Enhancv data.
Job seekers reevaluating their strategy for early-year career moves might want to reconsider, as January and February present a challenging combination of intense competition and slow hiring. A study by career platform Enhancv indicates that the initial months of the year are not optimal for job applications.
The Enhancv study analyzed 25 years of federal hiring data alongside five years of resume activity. This data was correlated with a survey of U.S. recruiters and hiring managers to identify seasonal trends in the job market.
The research found that most job hunters enter the market in January and February, precisely when hiring activity is at its lowest. Resume submissions in January, for instance, are 11.6% above the average, marking a 51% increase compared to December. This surge contributes to a common misconception that January is a prime application month, largely due to its comparison with the slower preceding month.
Instead, job listings tend to peak three times annually: in April, July, and October. The most favorable period for applicants spans from May through August, with June identified as the optimal month to submit applications. During June, hiring activity rises by 16.3% above average, while candidate competition decreases by 8%. Although April sees a rise in job postings, a high volume of applicants can diminish the advantage.
December is noted as the slowest month for hiring, falling 26.5% below the average, making it a less ideal time for job applications and more suitable for resume preparation.
The study also factored in broader economic conditions, comparing each month to surrounding months within the same year to distinguish seasonal fluctuations from overall economic downturns. Overall job openings have seen a general decline since 2022 as companies work to trim budgets.
Recruiters largely pointed to April (12.7%), May (13.6%), and June (12.1%) as the most active hiring months. A secondary increase in hiring activity is observed leading up to the holiday season, with 30.8% of recruiters noting a fall hiring boost.
The time from job posting to offer can extend, with 36% of recruiters reporting that it typically takes two to four weeks. This timeline suggests that the surge in job postings during April contributes to increased hiring in May and June, with a subsequent rise in July maintaining momentum through August.
June emerges as the strongest month for job seekers, with hiring rates increasing significantly above average while applicant competition simultaneously cools, providing a distinct advantage.
