Berlin's Far-Left Leader Proposes Seizing 200,000 Apartments Amid Housing Crisis

Berlin's far-left leader, Elif Eralp, has pledged to seize ownership of 200,000 apartments from corporate landlords to address the city's escalating housing crisis. Eralp, who is poised to become the city's mayor leading a coalition, stated that the move is aimed at creating a more affordable Berlin where residents can live with dignity, irrespective of their income or background.

The proposal, rooted in the policies of her party Die Linke, which has historical ties to the former East German communist party, has gained traction in the city. Berlin, once characterized by its affordability, has seen rents rise significantly, pushing many residents out.

Eralp's plan to expropriate properties from major landlords like Deutsche Wohnen and Vonovia has been met with strong criticism from business leaders. Emmanuel Heisenberg, CEO of renovation firm Ecoworks, cautioned that such aggressive action against the private market could lead to "huge chaos" and deter future investment in new housing construction. Similarly, Luka Mucic, CEO of Vonovia, stated that while his company is open to discussing solutions, "socialization doesn't create any new housing."

Chancellor Friedrich Merz, whose conservative party was outranked by Eralp's in the recent election, has voiced concerns about the potential "devastating effects" on foreign investment and indicated that swift legislation would be pursued to prevent such expropriations.

Eralp's potential leadership also faces scrutiny over longstanding accusations of antisemitism leveled against some local branches of her party, often in connection with criticism of Israel. The issue is particularly sensitive in Germany, which has seen a rise in antisemitic incidents. Eralp has emphasized that ensuring the safety and well-being of Jewish, Muslim, and all other communities in Berlin is her "absolute priority," condemning the glorification of violence and terrorism.
