Benito Skinner Reveals Father's Cameo in 'Overcompensating' Season 2
The creator and star of the Prime Video comedy shared details about the upcoming season, including its increased queer content and a surprise familial appearance.
Benito Skinner, creator and star of the Prime Video comedy "Overcompensating," announced that his father will make a cameo appearance in the show's upcoming second season. Skinner revealed the news during a panel at The New Yorker Festival on Saturday.
Skinner, who plays the lead character Benny, described his father's role as a brief, "blink and you'll miss it" moment with no lines. He humorously noted his father's background in community theater in Boise, Idaho, as a precursor to his television appearance.
The series, which debuted in May 2025, draws inspiration from Skinner's own life. It follows Benny as he navigates his identity after moving to the fictional Yates College. In the show, Benny's parents are portrayed by Kyle MacLachlan and Connie Britton, while Mary Beth Barone plays his sister, Grace. Skinner shared that the casting of MacLachlan and Britton was influenced by their established careers, citing Britton's work on "Friday Night Lights" and MacLachlan's roles in "Desperate Housewives," "Sex and the City," and "Blue Velvet." He explained that the actors' pre-existing public personas add an interesting layer to their characters.
However, Skinner also clarified that while the actors resemble his parents, the characters are not exact replicas. He finds this distinction helpful for his own performance, allowing him to portray a version of himself rather than embodying his own persona directly.
Skinner also teased that "Overcompensating" Season 2 will be "so much gayer" than its predecessor, addressing fan feedback from the first season. He mentioned that the sophomore season features guest appearances from "Saturday Night Live" alum Aidy Bryant and DJ Zedd, the latter appearing in a spring break-themed episode. Skinner emphasized that the new season aims to retain the show's core essence while exploring new narrative directions and character growth.
"Overcompensating" Season 1 is currently available for streaming on Prime Video.
