Ben Shelton and Trinity Rodman: Navigating Sports' High Demands Together
Tennis star Ben Shelton discusses his relationship with soccer star Trinity Rodman, highlighting their shared understanding of the pressures of professional sports.
American tennis player Ben Shelton reflected on his relationship with soccer star Trinity Rodman, emphasizing how their shared experiences in professional sports have fostered a unique connection. Shelton spoke about their ability to understand each other's challenges, from athletic demands to media scrutiny, a bond he finds invaluable.
Shelton, who recently reached the U.S. Open final, shared that he and Rodman planned to visit The Gem Saloon in New York City after the match, regardless of the outcome. The trendy tavern, co-owned by NBA legend Steve Nash, had also hosted Shelton and his team after his 2023 U.S. Open semifinal appearance.
Rodman, a forward for the Washington Spirit, made a significant effort to support Shelton throughout the U.S. Open. On the day of the final, she played a game in Boston at 1 p.m. before traveling back to New York to attend Shelton's match, which began an hour later. Shelton described her arrival as a “superhuman effort,” noting she arrived just as the trophy ceremony was commencing after his loss.
"I think that it’s tough unless you’re living it to understand that it’s not just dealing with the on-court demands, the physical and mental demands, but then the media demands and different things that you have to deal with outside of sport and different partners that you may be doing events with," Shelton said. "There’s so many things that go into what we do and it’s exhausting. I think that being able to relate to somebody who has the same demands on the field and the media requirements is really cool to be able to see those things eye to eye. She probably deals with it even more with the star power that she has. So, we understand each other in a different way than anyone else can."
Shelton, who turned professional in June 2022, has seen his profile rise significantly, reaching the U.S. Open final and emerging as a prominent figure in American men's tennis. He acknowledged the U.S. Open's importance in his career, recalling his breakout performance in 2023 and his fondness for the city's sports culture.
"The energy of this tournament — I relate so well to the sports culture in New York and your average sports fan in New York," Shelton said. "I think that I’m passionate about what I do. I wear my heart on my sleeve. I think that New Yorkers can relate to that and I just love the city. I love the event. There’s no better two weeks in the year."
Despite the U.S. Open final loss, Shelton remains focused on his long-term development. "I’m so focused on the process, and I’m not as much worried about one result," he stated. "I guess I’m happy that I was able to make the finals of the U.S. Open — but I’m more on a journey in terms of my tennis, the level that I can get to. I’m not the player that I want to be yet."
Shelton is partnered with Thorne, a supplement manufacturer that collaborates with the Mayo Clinic. He credits their products, including daily electrolytes, magnesium bisglycinate, and creatine, for supporting his performance and providing peace of mind regarding anti-doping regulations.
Following the U.S. Open, Shelton withdrew from the Kinoshita Group Japan Open Tennis Championships, citing that the U.S. Open and Davis Cup had taken a toll on his body.
