Ben Shelton has reached his first-ever Grand Slam final, defeating fellow American Frances Tiafoe in the US Open semifinals. Shelton won the match with a score of 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5, securing his spot in the championship match.
Shelton's victory sets him up for a chance to end a 23-year drought for American men in Grand Slam singles finals. He will face French Open champion Alexander Zverev in the final. This marks Shelton's debut Grand Slam final, while it is Zverev's sixth.
The semifinal match, moved to a primetime slot, saw a high level of play from both friends. After dropping the first set, Shelton rallied, demonstrating a more mature and focused game, a sentiment he attributed to his growth since his last appearance in a New York semifinal in 2023. "I think I’ve grown up, I’m more mature, more focused," Shelton stated. "I know what my job is and I’m hundred percent committed."
Tiafoe, who was aiming to become the first Black man to reach the US Open final since Arthur Ashe, displayed strong play, particularly in the first set and during critical moments. However, Shelton's powerful serve and ability to seize momentum proved decisive, as he demonstrated in his previous upset victory over defending champion Carlos Alcaraz. "I’m going to need you guys on Sunday to bring the energy," Shelton urged the crowd. "I’m going for it here. I’m going to leave it all on the court. Let’s do this for the USA."
The match featured several pivotal moments, including a point replay dispute with chair umpire Aurelie Tourte, after which Shelton maintained his composure. Ultimately, Shelton secured the victory on his second match point, capitalizing on Tiafoe's unforced error.
Following the match, Shelton paid tribute to Tiafoe, referring to him as his "big brother." The two players embraced at the net, acknowledging their friendship despite the competitive outcome. Among the notable attendees in the stands were Knicks player Jalen Brunson and actor Ben Stiller. Shelton's father and coach, Bryan Shelton, was also present to support him.
