Ben Kay Urges England Rugby Team to Embrace 'Dark Places' for World Cup Success

Former England World Cup winner Ben Kay has advised the current national rugby team to embrace adversity and look inward to find the strength needed to win major tournaments. Kay, a veteran of England's 2003 World Cup-winning squad, stated that success often comes from confronting and overcoming challenging periods.

"The big thing is that the players have to own it," Kay said in a recent interview. "Success comes from going to dark places, carrying scars of defeat, and getting over it. Steve's got to be thinking about doing things differently."

Kay suggested that head coach Steve Borthwick should consider strategic changes, potentially drawing inspiration from the more free-flowing style seen in domestic club rugby, such as that displayed by fly-half Fin Smith at Northampton. "The shackles are on at international level," he noted, implying that a more liberated approach could benefit the team.

He also highlighted the potential value of bringing experienced figures into the coaching setup. Specifically, Kay mentioned Shaun Edwards, now a defensive coach for world champions France, as an "invaluable" addition to Borthwick's staff.
