Ben Jones, the actor who portrayed Cooter Davenport in the television series "The Dukes of Hazzard" and served two terms as a U.S. House Representative from Georgia, has died. He was 84.

Jones is best known for his role as "good ol' boy" mechanic Cooter Davenport on "The Dukes of Hazzard," appearing in over 140 episodes from 1979 to 1985. He reprised the character in the television film "The Dukes of Hazzard: Reunion!" in 1997 and "The Dukes of Hazzard: Hazzard in Hollywood" in 2000. His earlier acting credits include roles in "Together For Days" (1972), "Moonrunners" (1975), and "The Lincoln Conspiracy" (1977). In addition to his acting career, Jones served in the U.S. House of Representatives. He represented Georgia's 4th congressional district for two terms, from 1989 to 1993.

Tributes

Fellow "Dukes of Hazzard" cast member Tom Wopat, who played Luke Duke, shared a statement mourning Jones's passing. "'The Dukes of Hazzard' lost another integral part of their cast today," Wopat said. "Ben Jones was a fine friend and a fierce advocate of all the best things we can offer in the entertainment business. He will be sorely missed."

Whey Jennings, grandson of country music legend Waylon Jennings, also expressed his grief, noting Jones's support for his musical career. "I'll never forget all you have done for me, brother," Jennings wrote. "It's been an honor to share the stage with you so many times. Thank you for believing in me."

Jones's wife, Viator, remembered him as someone who "had the most amazing rich full life" and was deeply loved. She shared that he passed away at home while waiting to watch his beloved Atlanta Braves play baseball.
