Ben Affleck and his brother, Casey Affleck, made a rare joint appearance on the red carpet Tuesday evening at the Venice Film Festival for the screening of Casey's film "Company." Both brothers wore black suits, with Ben opting for a white shirt and Casey for an all-black ensemble.
Casey Affleck, 51, confirmed earlier on Tuesday that their father, Timothy Affleck, died this year. He mentioned during a press conference promoting his film that he had "lost both my mom and my dad this year." Their mother, Christine Affleck, died on June 2 following a battle with pancreatic cancer, as was previously reported in July. The exact date of Timothy Affleck's death was not specified.
Casey, who co-wrote, directed, and stars in "Company," dedicated the film to his parents. "I really wanted to show this movie to them, and I didn’t get to," he said. "I think they would have liked it."
Christine Affleck had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in December and her final wish was to witness her grandson's high school graduation, which she attended in May, dying in her sleep days later. Timothy Affleck largely stayed out of the public eye but appeared in Casey's 2010 mockumentary "I'm Still Here." In 2018, he defended his sons against sexual harassment allegations, telling Grazia magazine that Hollywood was a "disgusting place" that had taken a toll on them.
Timothy and Christine Affleck, who divorced in 1984, are also survived by five grandchildren: Indiana, Violet, Atticus, Fin, and Sam. Christine Affleck had a long career as a public school teacher, retiring in 2008 after 35 years. Ben Affleck previously spoke about his mother's dedication to education, noting her Harvard degrees and work as a fifth and sixth-grade teacher.
Ben Affleck, 54, is the father of three children with his ex-wife Jennifer Garner. The brothers' joint appearance comes at a difficult time, marked by the recent loss of both parents within months of each other.
