Ben Affleck Clarifies 'Gone Girl' Shower Scene, Discusses Jennifer Lopez's Career
The actor confirmed he did not use a prosthetic during the controversial scene and shared his perspective on why Jennifer Lopez may be overlooked for awards.
Ben Affleck has addressed speculation surrounding his full-frontal shower scene in the 2014 film "Gone Girl," confirming that he did not wear a prosthetic during the sequence. In an interview with Variety, Affleck stated, "I wore no prosthesis." He recalled only using a prosthetic once before in his career, for a nose in the film "Hollywoodland."
The scene in question involved Affleck's character, Nick Dunne, showering with his wife Amy, played by Rosamund Pike, shortly after her reappearance following a period of absence. Pike's character insisted Affleck strip down completely to ensure he was not wearing a wire.
Directed by David Fincher and adapted from Gillian Flynn's novel, "Gone Girl" was a critical and commercial success, grossing approximately $370 million worldwide on a $61 million budget. Fincher previously noted Affleck's suitability for the role, citing the actor's personal experience with public scrutiny, which mirrored the character's situation.
Beyond discussing "Gone Girl," Affleck also shared his thoughts on his ex-wife Jennifer Lopez's career, particularly her perceived lack of awards recognition. "I'm biased. I have an enormous amount of respect and admiration for what she can do," Affleck told Variety. He suggested that the degree of commercial success for a project does not always align with his own taste and that the subjective nature of awards can be influenced by personal biases.
"At the end of the day, it’s just a bunch of people voting on movie prizes," he added, implying that awards should not be the ultimate measure of an artist's worth.
Affleck and Lopez rekindled their relationship in 2021, marrying in July 2022 and holding a larger ceremony in August 2022. However, Lopez filed for divorce on their second wedding anniversary, with the divorce finalized in early 2025. Despite their separation, the former couple has continued to collaborate professionally, including on the upcoming film "Kiss of the Spider Woman."
Affleck also spoke about his current relationship with Lopez's children and his own children from his previous marriage to Jennifer Garner. "Jennifer Lopez is spectacular. Great to my kids, great ongoing relationship with them," he said. "I love her kids. They're wonderful. She's [an] enormously important, tremendous person of a lot of integrity who I adore and am grateful to."
When asked about his current romantic life following his divorce, Affleck stated that he is not actively dating and that his priorities lie with his children and his work. "There's not a lot of room. I'm not running around. It's just not a big priority in my life," he remarked.
