Ben Affleck Banned Twice From Instagram For 'Impersonating Himself'

Ben Affleck has disclosed that his Instagram account was twice deactivated after he was accused of impersonating himself on the platform, an experience he described during a recent interview with Variety.

The 54-year-old actor explained that his account had only six followers, consisting primarily of his children and their friends. He utilized the account as a means to monitor his children's social media activity. "I had six followers," Affleck stated. "It was my kids and some of their friends. It was just an excuse for me to look at [my kids'] social media accounts."

Affleck reflected on a time before social media's pervasive presence, where personal actions were not permanently recorded. "I experienced the whole world and had a whole life in private," he said. "I have a real sense of how valuable that is."

He noted that younger actors in the industry face significant pressure to cultivate an online following, as casting directors increasingly consider social media presence a relevant metric. "Every time I do a movie with young actors, we talk and I get a sense it's tougher," Affleck commented. "They feel an enormous pressure to be accruing an online following. Casting directors ask about [social followings] because it's a meaningful metric."

This revelation follows a widely publicized incident from May 2021, where media personality Nivine Jay shared a TikTok video detailing an interaction on the exclusive dating app Raya. Jay recounted matching with Affleck, initially believing the profile to be fake and unmatching him. Affleck then sent her a video via Instagram to confirm his identity, asking, "Nivine, why did you unmatch me? It's me."

At the time, Jay clarified that she did not intend to mock Affleck, stating, "I wasn't making fun of him in the video. I was making fun of myself for thinking he was a catfish and it was just supposed to be funny."

A representative for Affleck later clarified that he had not been active on dating apps for several years. He also recently provided an update on his personal life, indicating that dating was not a priority, with his focus on his children. Affleck shares three children, Violet, Fin, and Samuel, with his ex-wife Jennifer Garner. He rekindled his romance with Jennifer Lopez in 2021, and the couple married in 2022. Lopez filed for divorce from Affleck in early 2025.

In his interview with Variety, Affleck also shared his perspective on awards season and his respect for Lopez's work, while also discussing his amicable co-parenting relationship with Garner and his desire to remain present for his children's formative years.
