Belmont Park Reopens with Modernized Grandstand and Expanded Offerings

Belmont Park has unveiled its significantly renovated grandstand, a $455 million project designed to modernize the Long Island racing venue and enhance spectator amenities. The newly designed 300,000-square-foot facility in Nassau County is a substantial reduction from the previous 1.25 million square feet, focusing on open-air experiences and modern comforts.

The phased reopening began with limited access to the first two levels of the five-level grandstand. These areas include general admission seating, bars, dining establishments, and a NYRA betting room. Future phases will introduce luxury suites, an event space with views of the New York City skyline, and improvements to the spectator infield area, which is being designed to host concerts and other non-equestrian events.

Track and Facility Enhancements

The renovation included a $100 million upgrade to the racetrack itself, encompassing the 1 ½-mile dirt track, two turf tracks, and the addition of a new 1-mile Tapeta synthetic track. This synthetic track is intended for winter racing, particularly to replace the recently closed Aqueduct Racetrack. The new grandstand is designed with climate-controlled indoor spaces to improve spectator comfort during colder months, making it suitable for events like the Breeders' Cup, scheduled for October 2027.

"The old Belmont didn’t have a lot of heated areas," said Roger Cettina, a senior vice president at AECOM Tishman, a project builder. "If you came in October and it was a cold day — it was cold."

The seating capacity of the new grandstand will be approximately 10,000 for most race days, with the potential to accommodate over 50,000 for major events like the Belmont Stakes. This capacity is comparable to its post-UBS Arena construction level, a significant decrease from its peak capacity of around 90,000.

Focus on Fan Experience and Amenities

NYRA CEO David O’Rourke highlighted the project's goal of improving the everyday fan experience. "I think we’ve improved the everyday fan experience quite dramatically," O’Rourke stated.

The design emphasizes a more integrated experience, allowing fans to move more freely around the grounds. The paddock area has been doubled in size and is now more easily accessible, offering views of horses before they enter the track. This area is positioned behind the grandstand and track but remains visible from within the complex, which is equipped for dual-side sight lines.

Culinary offerings have also been upgraded, with chef Marc Forgione developing menus for the Turf Club and other dining areas. Options range from signature dishes like chili lobster on Texas toast to more traditional fare.

The official ribbon-cutting ceremony is anticipated in early 2027, in time for the return of the Belmont Stakes in June, which has been held at Saratoga since 2023. The redevelopment aims to position Belmont Park as a versatile venue capable of hosting various events throughout the year, beyond traditional horse racing.
