Belfast City Airport is seeking approval to extend its evening flight schedule and increase the annual limit on aircraft movements, as part of a significant expansion initiative. The operator has formally requested permission to push back the deadline for evening flights from 9:30 PM to 10:30 PM BST.

Additionally, the airport aims to raise its yearly cap on flight movements by 27%, from the current 48,000 to 61,000 per year. These proposed changes would necessitate a modification to the airport's legally binding Planning Agreement. The ultimate decision on these alterations is expected to rest with the infrastructure minister.

Matthew Hall, chief executive at Belfast City Airport, stated that the extended operating hours and increased traffic movement limits are essential to accommodate the projected rise in air travel demand. "The proposed changes would provide the operational flexibility required to facilitate airline schedules and future route development, while continuing to operate within a framework that recognises the importance of balancing growth with our commitment to being a responsible neighbour," Hall said.

The process to modify the Planning Agreement is anticipated to be lengthy, involving consultations with local councils and other relevant planning bodies. This procedure will run concurrently with the airport's ongoing planning process for a broader expansion of its facilities, which was initially outlined last year.

The proposals are likely to face opposition from local residents' associations and environmental advocacy groups. The airport has indicated that the changes are critical for meeting future demand.
