Bel Mooney Reflects on Aging and Embracing Life at 80
The author shares her philosophy on aging, emphasizing acceptance, vitality, and finding joy.
At 80 years old, Bel Mooney offers a candid reflection on the lessons learned from aging, advocating for a proactive approach to life that embraces change while maintaining vigor.
Mooney emphasizes the importance of self-care and acceptance, advising against drastic measures like facelifts while endorsing treatments like Botox for maintaining a more youthful appearance. She also stresses the value of physical fitness, suggesting that working on biceps can contribute to a sense of strength and well-being. "Getting old should mean getting wise to the fact that some things can’t be changed – therefore peace of mind and ease of spirit involve active acceptance," Mooney writes.
Beyond physical considerations, Mooney advocates for shedding activities and relationships that no longer bring joy. "Ditch what bores you," she advises, highlighting the need to curate one's life to focus on fulfilling experiences.
Mooney also shares her personal journey with physical challenges, noting that she has had both hips replaced. Despite these, she finds joy and freedom in activities like riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. "I’ve had both hips replaced, but it was thrilling to be able to swing a leg back over that pillion seat on our Harley this summer, because accepting the reality of ageing doesn’t mean giving up," she states.
Her philosophy extends to embracing simple pleasures, such as enjoying wine. Mooney concludes by emphasizing that her motivation for staying active and engaged is not solely about appearance but about maintaining vitality, with looking good being a positive byproduct. "My motivation isn’t vanity but vigour and looking better is the cherry on the cake," she writes.
