Bed Bug Outbreak Grounds Qantas Flight, Stranding Passengers

A Qantas flight was grounded and passengers were left stranded for days following a bed bug infestation detected on October 9. The incident occurred on flight QF5 from Perth to Rome, where travelers reported being bitten by bugs during the flight.

Passengers were administered antihistamines, but the supply reportedly ran out. Consequently, Qantas was compelled to cancel the return flight from Rome to Perth on Saturday. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner was subsequently removed from service for a comprehensive cleaning and fumigation process.

Qantas stated that affected passengers were provided with accommodation and rebooked onto alternative flights within 48 hours of their original departure time. A Qantas spokesperson issued an apology for the cancellation of the Saturday service from Rome to Perth, explaining that the grounding allowed for a deep clean of the aircraft after the issue was identified in a small number of economy seats.

The Perth-to-Rome route is a popular non-stop service for the airline, which had extended its seasonal operations through late October by adding 40 flights and nearly 10,000 seats.

Bed bugs are small, wingless insects, typically measuring one to five millimeters in length, that feed on human blood. They are known to spread via clothing, furniture, and personal belongings. Eradicating them is notoriously challenging, requiring rapid heat and freezing techniques, chemical treatments, and fumigation.

While bed bug bites can cause itching and swelling, they are not known to transmit diseases to humans. According to the Victorian Government's Better Health Channel website, bites typically result in a large, red, and itchy weal that may fade to a red spot. The reactions to bites vary; some individuals experience no reaction, while others develop itchy, swollen welts.

This is not the first reported instance of bed bugs on flights. In 2017, bed bugs were discovered on a British Airways flight from Vancouver to London. More recently, in 2024, passengers on a Turkish Airways flight from Johannesburg to Istanbul also complained of a bed bug outbreak.
