Bed Bug Infestation Disrupts Train Services, Raises Staff Concerns
Southeastern train cancellations and driver refusals stem from bed bug sightings in train cabs at West Marina depot.
Train services have faced cancellations and delays due to a bed bug infestation affecting the West Marina train care depot near Hastings, East Sussex. The issue, which began last week on September 22, has led to drivers refusing to operate affected trains, citing concerns for their well-being.
At least three trains were removed from the schedule on Friday, with two driver cabs sealed off to contain the problem. Reports indicate one driver refused to move a train unless provided with protective gear, contributing to further service disruptions.
A pest control van was observed at the depot on Friday morning. Oly Turner, Head of Drivers for Southeastern, stated that the company has a strong relationship with its drivers and investigates all reports thoroughly. He confirmed that cases have been isolated to the drivers' cabs in only two trains and that no bed bugs have been found in passenger areas.
"We continually carry out robust cleaning across our trains and stations, ensuring our customers and employees can travel safely and with confidence," Turner said. A spokesperson for Southeastern added that no issues were reported on Highspeed 1 services.
