Bed Bug Infestation Disrupts Train Services, Prompts Cancellations
Pest problem affects driver cabs at West Marina depot, leading to service suspensions and staff concerns.
Train services have been disrupted and carriages taken out of commission due to a bed bug infestation that has affected the West Marina train care depot in East Sussex, England. The issue, which began last week, has primarily impacted the drivers' cabs, leading to delays and cancellations on routes serving London and Kent.
According to reports, drivers have expressed reluctance to operate trains carrying the pests, citing concerns about the infestation spreading. At least three trains were reportedly removed from service on Friday alone, with two driver cabs sealed off to contain the problem. One driver allegedly refused to move a train without protective gear, contributing to further cancellations.
A pest control service was called to the depot on Friday morning. Southeastern trains stated that affected trains undergo thorough checks before being returned to service. Oly Turner, Head of Drivers for Southeastern, confirmed that the cases have been confined to the drivers' cabs in two trains and that no bed bugs have been identified in passenger areas. Southeastern maintains robust cleaning protocols for its trains and stations to ensure the safety of passengers and employees.
