Beauty Expert Explains Why Women May See More Facial Hair in Their Thirties
Hormonal changes and individual hair follicle cycles are cited as primary reasons for the emergence of coarser facial hair.
Women in their thirties may begin to notice an increase in coarser, darker facial hair, particularly on the chin, jawline, and upper lip. Beauty expert Danielle Louise attributes this change primarily to hormonal fluctuations and the natural growth cycles of individual hair follicles.
Louise, who has over 17 years of experience in the beauty industry, explains that hair follicles operate on their own independent growth cycles. Occasionally, a single follicle might remain in its active growing phase longer than surrounding follicles, leading to the perception of faster hair growth. This can result in hairs that seem to sprout quickly and become noticeable.
The more significant factor, according to Louise, is hormonal influence. "Hormones can influence the type of hair a follicle produces," she stated. This hormonal shift can transform previously fine hairs into coarser, darker ones, leading women to become aware of recurring facial hairs they may not have experienced in their younger years.
While not every woman in her thirties will develop facial hair, Louise notes that the appearance of one or two isolated hairs is common and becomes more noticeable with age.
When it comes to removal, Louise suggests different approaches based on the extent of the hair growth. For one or two stray hairs, tweezing is often the simplest method. She advises using clean tweezers and avoiding excessive plucking or picking at the skin afterward. For areas with more significant hair growth, treatments such as waxing, threading, or laser hair removal are recommended.
Louise also emphasized the importance of consulting a doctor if there is a sudden or significant change in facial or body hair. She distinguished between the occasional random hair and a noticeable increase in the amount, thickness, or pattern of hair growth. "If something has changed quite suddenly, particularly alongside other changes to your body, that’s when it’s sensible to speak with your GP rather than simply treating it as a beauty concern," she advised.
