During the third quarter of the Chicago Bears' 27-7 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football, linebacker T.J. Edwards was observed appearing to listen to a play call from Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts. The moment, captured by the ABC broadcast, occurred as the teams gathered on the field at Soldier Field.
Moments after the apparent eavesdropping, Edwards intercepted a pass intended for wide receiver DeVonta Smith on a fourth-down play. The interception marked a significant turning point in the game, giving the Bears possession and effectively sealing the win.
Following the game, Edwards was asked about the incident. "No," he told The Athletic when asked if he understood anything from Hurts' call. "I was like, ‘Maybe I’ll hear some familiar stuff,’ and like they must have changed language up because I had no idea what they were talking about."
The interception led to a 13-play drive for the Bears, culminating in a one-yard touchdown run by third-string quarterback Case Keenum, extending their lead in the fourth quarter. The Eagles' subsequent offensive possession ended on downs.
Edwards, originally an Eagle, played for Philadelphia from 2019 until 2022 before joining the Bears. He is now in his fourth season with Chicago.
