Bears Kicker Accused of Attempting to Trip Packers Receiver in Heated Rivalry Game
Cairo Santos allegedly extended his leg toward Matthew Golden after an on-field exchange, drawing criticism from fans.
A contentious moment unfolded during the Green Bay Packers' 31-7 victory over the Chicago Bears when Bears kicker Cairo Santos was accused of attempting to trip Packers wide receiver Matthew Golden. The incident occurred after Golden returned a punt 17 yards and went out of bounds near the Bears' sideline.
Video footage appears to show Golden running along the sideline when he collided with a Bears coach, who then fell over. Shortly after, as Golden was leaving the sideline, Santos extended his leg toward the receiver in what many perceived as an attempt to trip him. No penalty was called on the play.
Following the game, Golden addressed the incident, confirming that Santos had tried to trip him. "Yeah, he did. He did. But it’s all good. I ain’t got nothing to say to him," Golden stated.
The 23-year-old Golden had a notable performance in the game, recording a career-high 123 receiving yards on six catches, contributing to his developing sophomore season. In contrast, Santos missed his only field goal attempt and converted one extra point.
This confrontation added to the already intense atmosphere of the historic rivalry between the Packers and Bears. The game also saw Packers linebacker Zaire Franklin respond to comments made by Bears receiver Luther Burden III. Burden had previously stated that his team wanted to "beat them real bad and make them quit." Franklin countered, "You got guys that never really made a real play in this league talkin’ bout making somebody quit. That’s weird. We don’t do that. He quit today, by the way. He ain’t wanna play anymore."
