Bears Defensive Star Montez Sweat Suspended Two Games for PED Violation

Chicago Bears defensive end Montez Sweat has been suspended for two games by the NFL for violating the league's performance-enhancing substances policy, the league announced Tuesday. The specific substance Sweat tested positive for was not disclosed.

The suspension is a significant blow to the Bears (3-2) as they prepare to face the Atlanta Falcons on the road this Sunday and the New England Patriots at home on Thursday Night Football in Week 7. Sweat will be eligible to return for Chicago's Monday Night Football game against the Seattle Seahawks on November 2.

Sweat, 30, has been a crucial part of the Bears' defense since being acquired in a trade from Washington in 2023. This season, he has recorded two sacks in five games. In his Pro Bowl 2023 season, he achieved a career-high 12.5 sacks.

The Bears are currently tied with the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions in the NFC North standings, trailing the Minnesota Vikings who lead the division at 5-0. The team is also navigating the absence of starting quarterback Caleb Williams, who is sidelined with a hamstring injury. Williams could potentially return for Sunday's game against the Falcons.

Sweat is in the third year of a four-year, $98 million contract with the Bears.
