Adventurer Bear Grylls, known for his survival expertise, was recently observed collecting groceries from a Waitrose delivery van on a Welsh beach. The 52-year-old used a custom-built amphibious vehicle, capable of traveling on both land and water, to ferry his shopping from the mainland to his private island, Saint Tudwal's Island West, located off the Llŷn Peninsula.
Grylls, a former SAS trooper and Chief Scout, was seen greeting the delivery driver while his distinctive boat was parked on the sand near Abersoch Harbour Beach. The unusual delivery method amused the driver, who reportedly took a photograph of Grylls. Grylls also engaged in a brief conversation with a local during the shopping trip.
He and his wife, Shara, purchased the island and a houseboat on the River Thames in 2001 for less than the price of a London flat at the time. Grylls described the island as initially being in a derelict state, lacking power, water, and a roof, though it did include a 200-year-old lighthouse and two lightkeeper's cottages.
He previously detailed the challenges of transporting supplies to the island before obtaining permission to build a slipway, a process that took around ten years. Before the slipway, he had to row ashore and carry supplies a mile up the beach, a task made difficult by the rough seas. The couple has since sold the houseboat but primarily resides on Saint Tudwal's, in addition to a penthouse in Battersea.
Grylls' career has included extensive survival television programs like "Born Survivor" and "Man Vs Wild," where he famously consumed insects, animal droppings, and his own urine. However, he faced controversy in 2008 when it was revealed that some segments of his first television series were staged, leading him to apologize to viewers who felt misled.
