Bear Enters California Library, Steals Honey and Snacks
Surveillance footage captured the moment a bear rummaged through the Mammoth Lakes Library, consuming snacks before leaving without causing damage.
A bear entered the Mammoth Lakes Library in California and consumed snacks, including honey, before leaving the premises without causing any damage. The incident occurred early Wednesday morning when library staff were not present.
Surveillance footage shows the bear pawing its way through the building, taking small amounts of peanut butter, cookies, and honey. The Mono County Office of Education, referencing the 100th anniversary of Winnie the Pooh, humorously suggested the bear might have been seeking a copy of the book. The library had recently invited community members to visit any of its seven branches to pick up Winnie the Pooh books or other bear-themed literature.
Josef Bopp, Director of Libraries, stated that the bear entered the library around 6:10 a.m., several hours before its 10 a.m. public opening. Officials reminded residents and visitors that bears in the Mammoth Lakes area are wild animals and should be given ample space. They urged the public not to approach or feed bears, to use bear-resistant trash containers, and to keep vehicle doors and windows closed. Bopp also noted that while the library welcomes visitors, food is not permitted among its circulating materials.
This event follows a recent incident in California where a French bulldog died protecting its owners from a bear attack. The dog reportedly suffered broken ribs and numerous bite and claw wounds while attempting to scare away a large bear that approached the couple's home. A spokesperson for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife described such bear attacks as rare.
