Bear 89 'Backpack' Crowned 2026 Fat Bear Week Champion

Bear 89, affectionately known as "Backpack," has been declared the winner of the 2026 Fat Bear Week competition, held annually at Katmai National Park and Preserve in Alaska. Backpack triumphed over rival Bear 910 in the final round, securing the coveted title of "chonkiest" bear after an intense tournament that captivated participants globally.

The final vote count saw Backpack receive 103,334 votes, narrowly defeating Bear 910's 98,253 votes. The competition, which spanned multiple rounds, garnered over 2.3 million votes from participants around the world.

Backpack's victory marks a significant achievement for the approximately 20-year-old bear. His nickname originates from his habit as a cub of riding on the back of his mother, Bear 435 Holly, who herself won Fat Bear Week in 2019. Despite a challenging start to his life, including a severe leg injury in 2007 as a yearling that raised concerns about his survival, Backpack persevered. His leg healed, and he became a well-known figure at Brooks Falls.

This year's tournament featured a competitive field. Backpack advanced through the rounds by defeating other large bears, including a decisive victory over Bear 620 in the second round with over 95% of the vote. He faced a closer challenge in the semifinals against Bear 164, Bucky, winning that matchup by approximately 4,000 votes. His opponent in the final, Bear 910, had previously eliminated Bear 909 and a member of the 132 family.

Fat Bear Week celebrates the success of Katmai's brown bears as they prepare for winter hibernation. The bears, particularly those at Brooks Falls, gorge on salmon during the rich summer months to build up necessary fat reserves. The event serves as a popular online engagement activity, drawing attention to the park's wildlife and conservation efforts.
