Spending a day at the beach offers a chance for relaxation and recreation, but interactions with fellow beachgoers can sometimes detract from the experience. Etiquette experts emphasize that basic courtesy and consideration for others are key to ensuring enjoyable outings for all.
"In general, etiquette is all about being mindful of other people, which certainly includes being mindful of other people at the beach," said Nick Leighton, an etiquette expert and co-host of the "Were You Raised by Wolves?" podcast. "Although you’re outside, you are not alone and your behavior can and does affect other people."
Personal Space and Interaction
Maintaining an appropriate distance from other beachgoers is crucial. Jodi R.R. Smith, president of Mannersmith Etiquette Consulting, suggests finding a spot at least three paces away from others' belongings to allow for personal space and easy passage without disturbing neighbors.
When interacting, it is important to gauge receptiveness. Diane Gottsman, an etiquette expert and author, advises against assuming others wish to converse. "Watch their body language and if they engage, feel free to continue," she said. "If they put their ear buds in, it’s a sign they want to be left alone."
Respecting the Environment and Wildlife
Beachgoers should also be mindful of their surroundings and the local environment. Blocking others' views with large umbrellas or tents can be disruptive. Experts recommend positioning such items so they do not obstruct the view of the water for those behind.
When it comes to wildlife, experts advise against feeding birds and other animals, as this can negatively impact the local ecosystem. If encountering marine life, such as starfish, it is important to return them to the water before leaving the beach.
Managing Belongings and Activities
Shaking sand from towels or clothing near others is considered rude. Smith recommends a "gather, then shake" approach, where individuals move away from other beachgoers before shaking out their belongings, especially on windy days.
Games and recreational activities should be conducted in designated or clear areas away from others to prevent disruptions. "For any games, find a clear area away from other people," Leighton advised. "Frisbees going overhead can make some people nervous."
Noise and Cleanliness
Noise levels are another significant consideration. Loud music or conversations can easily extend beyond one's personal space. "Things like music and loud cellphone conversations easily travel beyond the boundaries of your blanket and affect other people, so be mindful of what’s escaping your bubble," Leighton noted. He also advises being conscious of language, particularly around children, and refraining from profanity or arguments.
Leaving a mess is also a key faux pas. Experts urge beachgoers to clean up their area before departing and to avoid littering, which can be harmful to wildlife and the environment.
Adhering to Beach Rules
Finally, following posted rules and guidelines is essential for safety and courtesy. "Follow the signs that act as warnings for your safety and the safety of others," Gottsman stated. This includes observing designated swim boundaries and understanding local customs, as "every beach has its own" set of unwritten rules.
