BBC Upholds Complaint Over Comedian Katherine Ryan's Victoria Beckham Remark

The BBC has upheld viewer complaints regarding a remark made by comedian Katherine Ryan about Victoria Beckham on the satirical news program 'Have I Got News For You.' The Executive Complaints Unit (ECU) determined that Ryan's joke, which linked an obscene term to the fashion designer, was not editorially justified.

The incident occurred during a November 2025 episode where the show, hosted by Ryan, discussed David Beckham's alleged use of a similar term in an email to his publicist regarding his knighthood. While the ECU found panelist Maisie Adam's use of the word acceptable in that context, Ryan's subsequent comment about Victoria Beckham was deemed to have no justification.

Two viewers had complained that Ryan's remark was "gratuitously offensive." The ECU ruling stated there was "no such justification for a comment which presented Victoria Beckham as equivalent to a particularly offensive word."

In response, Ryan posted a video on social media, attributing the comment to a difficult period following the birth of her newborn and what she described as "matrescence." She acknowledged that there was "no defence" for the remark but suggested it was a "stupid joke" made in jest, noting the audience reaction and her immediate clarification of affection for Victoria Beckham.

Ryan also shared a screenshot of a private message sent to Lady Beckham to "make it clear it was a stupid joke and I didn't mean any harm towards you at all." She expressed that the BBC's classification of her comment as a slur was difficult to accept, especially given her understanding of the context as a joke.

The episode, which touched upon David Beckham's reported use of an expletive when referring to the honors committee as "a bunch of c---s," led to the internal investigation after the complaints were lodged. David Beckham has since been knighted.
