The BBC announced Tuesday that it will eliminate approximately 100 jobs within its News department and cease television broadcasts for BBC Three, BBC Scotland, and Radio 4 Extra in the spring of 2027. These measures are part of a larger £500 million cost-cutting initiative aimed at addressing sustained financial pressures.

BBC Director-General Mark Brittin stated that the organization must "make every pound work harder for audiences" while adapting to a changing media landscape. Content previously carried by the soon-to-be-closed channels will still be available on platforms such as BBC iPlayer and BBC Sounds. BBC Scotland will continue as an iPlayer channel, with content also accessible on BBC One and BBC Two in Scotland.

This marks the second time BBC Three has been removed from linear television; it was previously an online-only service for six years before returning as a full channel in January 2022. Radio 4 Extra programming will be accessible via BBC Sounds, with "The Daily Service" also available on local radio.

Staff members were informed of the impending job losses on Tuesday morning. Rachel Jupp, director of BBC News, indicated in an email that these proposals represent a net closure of just over 100 roles, with a total value of around £5.5 million. She acknowledged the difficulty of the news for affected employees and committed to working with colleagues and trade unions throughout the consultation process, aiming to minimize compulsory redundancies. Further cost-cutting assessments are anticipated in the coming weeks.
