BBC Sport Faces Restructuring and Potential Strikes Amid Cost-Cutting Measures
The British Broadcasting Corporation's sports department is preparing for significant job losses and departmental changes, sparking concern among staff and potential industrial action.
The BBC Sport department is poised for a significant overhaul this week, with staff anticipating a wide-ranging cost-saving program that is expected to lead to substantial redundancies. Director of sport Alex Kay-Jelski is scheduled to address employees at a department-wide summit on Wednesday afternoon to outline the restructuring plans.
Employees are reportedly being offered voluntary redundancy as Kay-Jelski continues his efforts to reshape the department, aiming for a more digitally focused audience. However, the proposed changes have created internal divisions, with some staff members considering strike action in response to the developing situation at MediaCity in Salford.
The National Union of Journalists is aware of the unfolding situation, though they have not yet responded to requests for comment. The announcement, referred to as a 'savings announcement,' has already been communicated to staff, with a physical meeting planned for 2 p.m. at MediaCity, while others will join remotely.
This is not the first wave of changes under Kay-Jelski; dozens of redundancies were made last year. Earlier this month, the BBC announced the cancellation of "Ski Sunday" and faced criticism for not establishing a studio in North America for the summer's World Cup. Several other events have also been dropped, including the Commonwealth Games, the Boat Race, and the Rugby League World Cup. "Football Focus" was also concluded at the end of the last season.
Further cuts are apparent in local radio coverage. Previously, the BBC had considered reducing the number of local radio commentators sent to away matches. On Merseyside, local radio commentary for Tranmere Rovers and for the women's matches of Everton and Liverpool has ceased. Additionally, updates from the grounds of Chester FC and Southport have been scrapped. On Saturday afternoons, when local teams are not playing and rugby league is not broadcast, listeners will receive a national sports program instead.
A BBC spokesperson declined to comment on specific details of the changes but stated in a release, 'BBC Radio Merseyside provides unrivalled local sports coverage across the region from football to rugby league and more. For the 2026/27 football season, across the BBC Local Radio network, there is extensive live football commentary, covering every English Football League club, every round of the FA Cup, and thousands of matches across the football pyramid.'
