BBC Radio 1 has undergone a significant schedule overhaul, replacing established presenters with social media influencers in a move aimed at refreshing its on-air talent. Six prominent stars, including Dean McCullough and Melvin Odoom, were axed in July to make way for new faces.

Nat O'Leary, a weekend presenter who had been with the station for five years, bid an emotional farewell to her show on Saturday. She announced her departure via Instagram, expressing gratitude to her listeners for their support and stating that her dream job had come true. O'Leary shared moments from her final day on air with co-presenter Vicky Hawkesworth and producer Luciano Domenico.

O'Leary permanently joined BBC Radio 1 in 2023, following earlier work covering shows and participating in the station's Christmas Presenter Scheme in late 2021. Her exit comes as part of a broader shift that sees presenters like Swarzy, Rickie Haywood-Williams, and James Cusack also depart.

Among the new hires are social media influencer GK Barry, whose real name is Grace Eleanor Keeling, and content creator Charley Marlowe. GK Barry, known for her popular podcast "Saving Grace," has been given a two-hour weekday slot starting at 1 p.m. later this month. She has previously served as a relief presenter for the station. Marlowe, who narrated the BBC Three dating series "I Kissed A Girl," will co-host a show with Vicky Hawkesworth on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Station boss Aled Haydn Jones reportedly believes that integrating content creators will enhance listener engagement and reach. GK Barry expressed her excitement about hosting her own BBC Radio 1 shows, promising music, exciting guests, humor, and personal stories.

Dean McCullough, who had been with BBC Radio 1 for six years, described his departure as challenging, particularly in adhering to the BBC's impartiality guidelines. McCullough, who previously presented the Early Breakfast show, stated that moving to the BBC required him to "sacrifice my public views and in turn, a part of my voice," and that he had to conduct advocacy "in the shadows."

Award-winning duo Mylo & Rosie will take over McCullough's former slot. James Cusack's Weekend Breakfast show will now be hosted by Emil Franchi. Charlie Hedges will continue to host the Live Lounge, now joined by Jeremiah Asiamah, who replaces Melvin Odoom. Asiamah is known for his high-energy music sets.

Melvin Odoom recently announced he is expecting his first child with his girlfriend, Hannah Holland.

Lauren Layfield will host The Official Chart: First Look from Birmingham on Sundays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., marking the first time the program will broadcast live from the city. Sunday evenings will feature new shows including "Life Hacks" with Shanequa Paris and Oré Olukoga, followed by Sian Eleri's "Chillest Show." Alyx Holcombe's "Indie Show" is moving to Tuesdays at 11 p.m. The station's new presenter showcase will shift to weekend mornings from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m.
