TV licence fee income has dropped by more than £1 billion in real terms over the past decade, with half a million people ceasing to pay the fee in the latest financial year. BBC's new leadership is reportedly exploring alternatives to the traditional licence, including a mandatory 'household levy'.

This potential shift, discussed by BBC boss Matt Brittin, would require every household to pay a fee to the broadcaster, irrespective of whether they consume its programming. Critics have voiced concerns about mandating payment for a service individuals may not utilize.

The price of the TV licence increased to £180 annually on April 1, up from £174.50. Despite the decline in overall revenue, the BBC reported strong licence sales during the World Cup, partly attributed to on-screen QR codes encouraging viewers to "Buy a TV Licence."
