The BBC's educational service, Bitesize, has drawn criticism for including Guy Fawkes in a game alongside prominent civil rights activists such as Nelson Mandela and Rosa Parks. The game, titled "Back in time with...Astonishing Activists," aimed to teach children about individuals who "wanted to change the world." Fawkes, known for the failed 1605 Gunpowder Plot to blow up Parliament, was listed in a section dedicated to activists who fought against discrimination and advocated for social change.

The inclusion of Fawkes, who plotted to assassinate King James I and much of the Protestant aristocracy, alongside figures like Mandela, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and anti-apartheid leader, and Rosa Parks, a pivotal figure in the American civil rights movement, prompted the BBC to remove the game. A BBC spokesperson acknowledged that the description of Fawkes was "too nuanced for the intended age group."

The game allowed children to learn about Fawkes's 1605 plot, which was motivated by unmet hopes among Catholic revolutionaries for greater religious tolerance following the accession of King James I. Despite the King moderating relations between Catholics and Protestants, some remained dissatisfied, leading to the plot. Fawkes was captured, tortured, and executed following the plot's failure, with his accomplices also killed.

The BBC stated that Bitesize offers thousands of educational resources which are regularly reviewed for relevance and appropriateness. This incident follows a 2023 controversy where the broadcaster's educational material alleged that "every Brit is 'descended from immigrants'," a claim that was subsequently removed.

The "Back in time with...Astonishing Activists" game also featured Emmeline Pankhurst, a leader of the British suffragette movement. Players were able to explore historical settings, learn about the activists' struggles, and engage in interactive elements like building digital bonfires, referencing the annual commemoration of the Gunpowder Plot on November 5th.

The BBC has since taken the decision to remove the game as acknowledged 'this description was too nuanced for the intended age group'

Rosa Parks, a key figure in the American civil rights movement, was also featured

Nelson Mandela, the anti-apartheid leader, was another historical figure included in the game
