BBC Criticized for 'Divisive Tosh' Article on 'Racist' Fingernail Trend

The BBC is facing criticism for an article that labels a popular manicure trend as "classist" and linked to "white supremacy." The piece highlights a growing demand for "bare-looking" fake nails, a trend described as "quiet luxury" on social media.

According to the BBC article, this minimalist nail style is contrasted with nail art, which is "linked back to black, Asian, and Latino communities." Beauty journalist Kristina Rodulfo is quoted in the article, suggesting that the trend promotes "blankness" and an "erasure of culture and identity" important to Black and Brown communities. She further asserts that terms like "elegant" or "tasteful," often used to describe these bare nails, can be euphemisms that perpetuate "white supremacist standards of beauty."

Critics have responded with outrage, accusing the BBC of publishing "divisive tosh" and pushing a "woke Left wing agenda." Ex-Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies called the piece "sadly very reflective of today's BBC." Choreographer Rosie Kay described the content as "utterly insane" and a "disgrace." Opera historian Alexandra Wilson stated that the politicization of everyday choices is becoming "deeply tedious" and that the BBC demeans itself by reporting the trend as "news."
