BBC Apologizes After Mistakenly Playing George Benson Song During Tribute to George Fenton
The broadcaster confused the late film composer with the living jazz musician, leading to social media criticism.
The BBC has issued an apology after mistakenly playing a song by jazz musician George Benson during a tribute to the late film composer George Fenton. The error occurred on BBC Radio 2's The Good Groove music program.
George Fenton, known for his scores for films such as "The Jewel in the Crown" and documentaries like "The Blue Planet," died unexpectedly on Monday at the age of 76. Following the news of his passing, presenter Melvin Odoom played "Nature Boy," a 1977 hit by George Benson, who is still alive and 83 years old.
A BBC spokesperson described the incident as a "production error." The mistake did not go unnoticed on social media, with composer David Arnold publicly criticizing the radio show on the platform Bluesky. "George was a genius composer and deserved better than that from the company he gave voice to," Arnold wrote.
Fenton, born in Kent in 1949, had a prolific career scoring for theater, television, and film. He received nominations for prestigious awards including Golden Globes, BAFTAs, and Academy Awards. His television work in the 1980s included "The Jewel in the Crown" and "The Monocled Mutineer." He was also recognized for composing theme music for various BBC news programs and documentaries.
In recent years, Fenton collaborated again with David Attenborough and producer Alastair Fothergill on the BBC One series "Wild Isles" in 2022. He had also scored natural history series such as "The Trials of Life," "Life in the Freezer," "The Blue Planet," "Planet Earth," "Frozen Planet," and "Life."
His management confirmed his death on Monday, October 5, in London. Fenton is survived by his wife, ex-wife, three daughters, and seven grandchildren.
