Bay Area Cities Lead Nation in Cyberattack Vulnerability, Analysis Finds
Oakland, San Francisco, and San Jose identified as top targets due to concentration of high-risk industries and data.
Oakland has been identified as the most vulnerable city in the United States to cyberattacks, with San Francisco and San Jose also ranking high on a new analysis of national cyber threats. The study, conducted by software company ShareVault, highlights the Bay Area's disproportionate risk despite its status as a global technology hub.
Oakland ranked first with 102.25 breaches per 10,000 residents. San Francisco followed in second place, with 40% of its industries categorized as high-risk. San Jose was ranked fourth, with a 39% concentration of high-risk industries and the tenth-highest breach rate.
The analysis evaluated 58 major U.S. cities, examining factors such as cybersecurity job availability, the number of employees in cybersecurity-related roles, data breaches, and the concentration of high-risk industries. According to the findings published by Manufacturing Business Technology (MBT), California's high ranking is attributed to companies and individuals possessing "data and money," which are prime targets for hackers.
Other California cities also appeared on the list of vulnerable locations. Long Beach was ranked sixth with the third-highest breach rate and fifth-highest cyber vacancy rate. Sacramento followed in seventh place, recording 84.12 breaches per 10,000 residents, the fourth-highest rate nationally.
This analysis comes in the wake of a significant cyberattack that prompted a state of emergency in Foster City, a Bay Area city, in March. The attack forced the city to suspend services and take its entire network offline. Additionally, in late April and early May, the learning management system Canvas, used by numerous universities worldwide, was breached, resulting in the theft of extensive student information.
