Barber Sentenced for Gruesome Razor Attack, Prosecutors Criticize Lenient Judge

A Yonkers barber has been sentenced to 2.5 years in prison for a violent attack that involved a straight razor and left a customer with a severed artery. Jeury Fernandez Navarro, 38, was convicted of second-degree assault and weapon possession for the incident that occurred on August 4, 2025, at the Escape Barber Shop on South Broadway.

Prosecutors had sought a five-year prison sentence for Navarro, who allegedly attacked Carlos Santana Cordero, 27, after suspecting Cordero had a relationship with his girlfriend. According to court documents, Navarro grabbed Cordero by the hair, held a gold-plated razor to his neck, and slashed his left arm as the victim attempted to defend himself.

The attack continued outside the barbershop, where Navarro allegedly dragged Cordero by his hair and held the razor to his neck. A Yonkers police officer intervened and stopped the assault. Cordero sustained a lacerated artery in his left forearm and required surgery at Westchester Medical Center.

Crime scene photos displayed in court showed significant blood spatter on the shop's tiled floor and the weapon. Westchester County District Attorney Susan Cacace stated, "The defendant in this case callously and intentionally grabbed a defenseless victim by the head and proceeded to viciously slash him, even as the victim attempted to protect himself."

Despite the prosecution's recommendation for a harsher sentence, Judge George Fufidio imposed 2.5 years of incarceration followed by 1.5 years of post-release supervision. Cacace expressed her office's belief that a more substantial prison sentence was warranted given the severity of Navarro's actions.

This sentencing follows recent scrutiny of Judge Fufidio's decisions. The Post previously reported on a case where the judge set lower bail than prosecutors requested for a man accused of assaulting a bus driver, and for another individual accused of attacking a fire marshal. In both instances, the judge's bail decisions were questioned by victims and prosecutors.
