Barack Obama Mourns Death of Family Dog Sunny

The Obama family is mourning the loss of their beloved dog, Sunny, who died on Tuesday at the age of 13. Former President Barack Obama announced the news in an Instagram post, describing the dog as a "cherished member of our family."

Sunny joined the Obamas in the White House in 2013, shortly after Barack Obama's re-election to his second term as president. "We got Sunny at the start of our second term in the White House, and all of us – including our first dog, Bo – immediately fell in love," Obama wrote. He described Sunny as "a force of nature," who was athletic and energetic, often seen chasing squirrels and birds on the South Lawn.

Barack Obama reflected that Sunny was "pretty much perfect" from the moment she joined the family and remained "always loyal, always sweet, always ready for adventure, still fiery and gorgeous till the very end of her days." He added that the family will miss her terribly and imagines she is now reunited with their other dog, Bo, who died in 2021.

The Obamas had two dogs while living in the White House, with Bo, also a Portuguese Water Dog, being the first to join the family. Sunny's death comes after Barack and former First Lady Michelle Obama were seen together last week at a 9/11 anniversary event at Ground Zero in New York City, alongside other former presidents and first families.
