Banks' Pick-Six Seals Giants Victory Over Cardinals

Cornerback Deonte Banks sealed a 36-24 victory for the Giants over the Cardinals with a 98-yard interception return for a touchdown as time expired, propelling New York to a 3-1 record. The dramatic finish occurred on a day when many members of the 1986 Super Bowl championship team were present to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their title.

Facing fourth-and-goal at the Cardinals' 4-yard line, a situation requiring a touchdown and extra point to win, quarterback Jacoby Brissett attempted a pass to Michael Wilson. Banks intercepted the pass, found open space, and returned it for the game-ending score. This play shifted the narrative for Banks, who had faced criticism and whose NFL career was perceived to be in jeopardy in June.

Quarterback Jameis Winston, who had expressed frustration with criticism regarding his management of games, contributed to the win with three touchdown passes, though he also threw two interceptions. The Giants' 3-1 start marks their best since 2022 and their first three home wins since 2008.

Despite a fumble by Najee Harris in the second half, which marked the fifth fumble from the Giants' top three running backs in four games, the defense held. Abdul Carter made consecutive quarterback hits to force a three-and-out, and rookie linebacker Arvell Reese was instrumental in the second quarter. Reese forced an underthrown interception, made a key open-field tackle, and recorded his first career interception, setting up a Malik Nabers touchdown.

Winston's performance was a mix of success and turnovers. He threw two touchdown passes within a 128-second span late in the second quarter but followed with interceptions on his next two possessions. Some fans in the stadium chanted for newly acquired quarterback J.J. McCarthy.

Late in the second quarter, Winston ended a streak of 23 true possessions without a touchdown by leading a 56-yard drive that included a scramble drawing a facemask penalty and a pass to Malachi Fields for a 12-yard touchdown. Another touchdown pass from Winston to Nabers gave the Giants a 19-14 lead.

Winston's go-ahead touchdown pass late in the third quarter found Theo Johnson in the end zone, followed by a two-point conversion run by Harris. The Cardinals' Dominic Zvada remained perfect on field goals, including a 52-yarder, but the Giants' defense, after last week's interception by Jevon Holland sealed a win, once again found a way to secure the victory with a late defensive score.
