Bank Warns of Storm-Related Home Repair Scams
Fraudsters are expected to exploit bad weather and homeowner anxiety to offer fake or unnecessary home repairs, according to a new warning from Santander.
Homeowners face a heightened risk of falling victim to scams that prey on concerns about severe weather, a major bank has cautioned. Fraudsters are anticipated to leverage the forecast of heavy rain and storms this winter to solicit urgent home repairs.
Santander advises that unscrupulous individuals may approach doorsteps, claiming that properties require immediate work due to storm damage or need modifications to prepare for impending severe wind and rain. This warning comes as regions prepare for storms such as Austen and Boelo, with a significant portion of homeowners expressing concern about their properties being vulnerable to flooding within the next five years.
"Unfortunately, scammers know that people under pressure have less time to think and make those checks they normally would," said Chris Ainsley of Santander. "If a trader knocks at your door or gives you a ring unexpectedly, either claiming work must be done immediately, or asking for a large payment upfront, stop and ask yourself if it feels right."
These tactics can exploit the stress and urgency that stormy conditions and potential flood risks can create. The bank highlighted that between January and September, scammers defrauded households of approximately £5.37 million through building-related scams, including advance fee, purchase, and impersonation schemes. Following a particularly wet winter last year, around £1 million was lost to scammers for fake or questionable building work.
To safeguard against such schemes, Santander recommends that homeowners do not feel pressured by unsolicited offers of repair or storm-proofing work. Legitimate tradespeople typically do not rush clients or demand immediate action. Instead, homeowners are advised to seek expert opinions from independently vetted tradespeople, checking their reviews and credentials.
For necessary repairs resulting from storm damage or for preventative measures, obtaining multiple written quotes is recommended. These quotes should clearly outline the agreed work, total cost, materials, and payment schedule before any work commences. Homeowners should be wary of substantial deposits or sudden price changes, and ensure they receive clear explanations before making any payments.
