A Bank of America vice president was fatally stabbed in Times Square on her first day back at work following maternity leave. Erin Piacenti, 32, died Monday afternoon after being attacked by Pamela Cisneros Lopez, 49, on West 41st Street.

Piacenti, a mother to a newborn daughter named Madison, was standing on the street when Lopez approached and stabbed her. Lopez also injured a second victim, identified as 68-year-old Tak Kam, who was also stabbed in the stomach.

Authorities responded to the scene and encountered Lopez, who refused to drop two kitchen knives and waved them at officers. Police used a taser on Lopez before shooting her. She was taken into custody and received first aid. During a standoff, Lopez reportedly told officers, "I'm not dropping anything, I would rather kill both of you."

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated that Lopez had a "documented mental health history" with the department, including incidents in 2018 and 2019, but no arrests were made in those instances. Mayor Zohran Mamdani was present at a press conference alongside Tisch, where both officials praised the officers' actions in preventing further harm.

Lopez's brother, Patrick Peralta, told the Daily Mail that his sister had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder approximately ten years prior, following a period of postpartum depression. He noted that Lopez had previously attempted suicide by throwing herself in front of a train in March 2019. However, Peralta stated that his sister had seemed to be managing her mental health in recent years, attributing this to medication.

Peralta identified his sister in news footage of the incident and contacted the police. He expressed shock, stating that his sister had never been violent and that he believed she might not have taken her last injection of medication.

A GoFundMe fundraiser established for Piacenti's family has garnered over $95,000. The fundraiser description highlighted Piacenti's devotion to her family and friends, her professional accomplishments, and the warmth she brought to those around her. The funds are intended to support her daughter, Madison, as she grows up.

Police are continuing their investigation. Commissioner Tisch indicated there is no evidence to suggest the attack was an act of terrorism.
