Baltimore Art Gallery Owner Dies After Robbery Attack

A Baltimore artist and gallery owner has died days after she and her husband were attacked during a robbery. Claudia Bismark, 76, succumbed to her injuries on Thursday, October 2, 2026, after being assaulted the previous Tuesday morning.

Bismark and her husband, Wade Wilson, 60, were near Fleet Street in Baltimore's Southeast District when Montray McCray, 32, allegedly knocked them to the ground and stole Wilson's wallet. Bismark and Wilson were taken to the hospital. Wilson was released and is expected to recover, but Bismark died from her injuries.

Police arrested McCray on Thursday and charged him with assault, robbery, and reckless endangerment. He was taken to the Central Booking Intake Facility.

Bismark was a prominent figure in Baltimore's arts community. She co-owned the Bismark-Wilson Gallery in Fells Point, a neighborhood where she had lived for over 35 years. She also played a role in organizing the Artscape Festival and Art to Dine For.

Community members held a candlelit vigil on Thursday night on Fleet Street to honor Bismark. Dozens of friends, neighbors, and gallery patrons attended the event. Senator Bill Ferguson shared photos of the vigil on social media, noting the community's solidarity. Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott commented on the incident, calling it "senseless crime" that took the life of someone who "helped create one of our best festivals in Baltimore."
