Ballon d'Or Contenders Emerge as Pundits Debate Top Players

As the Ballon d'Or ceremony approaches, football pundits are divided on who should claim the coveted award for the men's best player.

European football expert Julien Laurens argued that Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was the best player in Europe last season, highlighting his outstanding performance in the Champions League. Kvaratskhelia was instrumental in his team's back-to-back title win, scoring in crucial knockout stages. Laurens believes Kvaratskhelia deserves the Ballon d'Or for his consistent excellence leading up to the World Cup, though he conceded Lamine Yamal might win due to his playing style and potential, despite a less impactful World Cup campaign and early Champions League exit for Barcelona.

Former Liverpool and Blackburn full-back Stephen Warnock suggested Lamine Yamal could win, particularly if he helped Spain secure the World Cup. Warnock also mentioned Michael Olise as a contender but personally favored Khvicha Kvaratskhelia for his electrifying impact on Paris Saint-Germain and his incredible performance last season. However, Warnock noted Kvaratskhelia's chances might be hampered by Georgia's absence from the World Cup.

Rory Smith, a reporter for The Athletic, anticipates the award will likely go to Lamine Yamal, citing the historical precedent of the Ballon d'Or often being awarded to players who win the biggest trophy, which in this context is the World Cup. Smith acknowledged that while Yamal may not have been Spain's most pivotal player, his fame and talent could secure him the award. Personally, Smith would present the award to Kvaratskhelia, calling him the most exciting player in European club football recently and a key part of the Champions League-winning PSG team. Smith emphasized that players should not be penalized for their national team's inability to qualify for major tournaments.

The Ballon d'Or winner is set to be announced in London on Monday.
