Weeks after the death of the well-known bald eagle Shadow’s mate, Jackie, the nonprofit Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV) has announced the name of the new eagle frequently seen with Shadow: Kaydee. Previously identified only as "KD1," the bird's new official name was shared in an Instagram post on Wednesday.
FOBBV typically reserves names for birds that stay in the area long-term, but decided to name KD1 Kaydee regardless of whether the bird remains in Big Bear Valley. Kaydee was first observed in the nest shared by Shadow and Jackie just hours after Jackie's death was announced earlier this month.
While FOBBV cannot definitively confirm Kaydee's gender, the bird's size suggests it is female. "We can only observe and let nature tell us the definitive answer to that question. With that being said, we are leaning towards female," the nonprofit stated.
Wildlife biologists with the Orange County Water District identified Kaydee by leg bands. The bird hatched in March 2022 in the Prado Basin along the Santa Ana River, approximately 100 miles from Big Bear. This would make Kaydee four years old.
Shadow and Kaydee have been observed together multiple times in recent weeks, including in a favored roost tree and vocalizing together in the valley. Fans of Shadow and Jackie have expressed support for the potential pairing on social media, with many hoping for Shadow's happiness after the loss of Jackie.
Jackie, estimated to be 14 years old, died on August 10 at the Ojai Raptor Center. She had been battling anemia for several weeks and was taken to the center in July after being found in serious condition in Big Bear Valley. The Ojai Raptor Center stated that all decisions regarding Jackie's care were guided by medical evidence and her welfare.
Friends of Big Bear Valley and other agencies are planning an official memorial for Jackie, with a date set for October 3rd. FOBBV is currently surveying their YouTube channel audience to help determine the appropriate size for the memorial venue.
